Maryland ranks 7 t h for green building activity in 2016

Maryland was once again one of the top states for green-friendly building projects in the country, according to a 2016 ranking released Wednesday.

The list, produced by the U.S. Green Building Council, measures state activity based on number of residents and size of new projects that adhere to the group’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, or LEED, standards — widely accepted green building guidelines.

Maryland routinely has placed high on the list since its start in 2010, coming in third in 2014 when the council certified more than 130 projects.

The state slipped slightly last year, ranking seventh, after the council certified 104 projects totaling 13.4 million square feet in the state last year — about 2.33 square feet per resident. Among the projects were Green Street Academy and the Parks & People building in Baltimore.
